Webcam

Laptop cameras still ship at 720p with grainy low-light performance, so a good external webcam is the cheapest upgrade to how you look on calls. But spec sheets push resolution while the sensor size, lens and exposure processing do the real work — a well-tuned 1080p camera beats a bad 4K one. Here's what to check.

Quick answer

A 1080p/60fps webcam covers most people on calls.

Sensor size, lens and autofocus matter more than the resolution number.

A physical privacy shutter is the only guarantee software can't bypass.

Fix your lighting first — move to 4K only for content creation.

Extended warranty & AMC — what to check before you say yes

For electronics the expensive failures are the display, the board and the battery. Extended cover is worth it only when it names those parts and offers a repair path in your city.

Ask these five questions

  • ✓Is the display / motherboard covered, and up to what value?
  • ✓Is accidental and liquid damage included, or is that a separate add-on?
  • ✓Is repair done at an authorised service centre with genuine parts?
  • ✓Is battery degradation covered, and below what health threshold?
  • ✓What's the turnaround promise, and is a standby device provided?

Usually not covered

  • ×Theft and loss (that's a separate insurance product)
  • ×Software issues, data loss and unauthorised repairs
  • ×Batteries and chargers on most plans
  • ×Cracked screens unless accidental damage is bought explicitly

Rule of thumb: worth considering on a high-value device you carry around, rarely worth it on a low-cost one where a plan costs more than ~15% of the price.

Shops near you that stock webcam

Sometimes the local dealer beats online on price, installation or the exchange offer. Tell us where you are and we'll list nearby stores. We don't rank or take money from any shop; results come from Google Maps.

The spec sheet, decoded

Resolution and frame rate

1080p is the call standard; 60fps looks smoother; 4K helps for cropping and recording.

Why it matters

Meeting apps often compress to 720p–1080p anyway — frame rate and sensor matter more.

What to check

'4K' cameras with tiny sensors look worse in dim rooms than good 1080p ones.

Sensor size and aperture

Bigger sensors and wider apertures (f/2.0 and below) gather more light.

Why it matters

Light gathering decides how you look at 8pm under a tube light — the most common real-world test.

What to check

Marketing hides sensor size; reviews with low-light samples are the truth.

Autofocus and field of view

Autofocus keeps you sharp when you lean; FoV (65–90°) sets how much of the room shows.

Why it matters

A 65–78° view frames one person well; 90°+ suits groups but shows your whole room.

What to check

Fixed-focus budget cams blur if you move closer than arm's length.

Microphones

Built-in single or dual mics with noise reduction.

Why it matters

Fine for solo calls in quiet rooms; a headset or USB mic still beats any webcam mic.

What to check

Don't pay extra for webcam audio if you already own a decent headset.

Privacy and mounting

Physical shutter, status , and a clip or tripod thread.

Why it matters

A shutter is the only webcam privacy guarantee that can't be bypassed by software.

What to check

Thin laptop lids defeat some clips — check for a tripod screw as backup.

Software and features

Auto-framing, background blur, HDR, exposure controls via companion apps.

Why it matters

HDR genuinely helps with bright windows behind you; auto-framing is a nice-to-have.

What to check

AI-tracking gimbal cams are clever but solve a problem most desk workers don't have.

Before you pay

  • ✓1080p/60fps with a proven sensor — check low-light sample footage.
  • ✓Autofocus and a physical privacy shutter.
  • ✓Field of view under 80° for solo calls.
  • ✓HDR if you sit with a window behind you.

Common traps

  • !No-name '4K' webcams — the sensor and lens can't back the label.
  • !Paying for 4K for meetings that compress you to 1080p.
  • !Ignoring the mount — a wobbly clip ruins every call.

₹3,000–₹6,500 (≈$36–$78) is the sweet spot for call quality. Creator-grade 4K cameras run ₹12,000–₹20,000 (≈$140–$240).
