Processor generation names are marketing gradients. What you feel daily is memory, storage speed, screen quality and whether the machine throttles under load.
Quick answer
8 GB minimum; 16 GB if you multitask heavily.
512 GB is the baseline; skip .
Check suffix (U for battery life, H for performance).
Verify screen panel quality and /storage upgrade slots.
In the shop
Ask the salesperson this exact question
Read these off your phone at the counter. The answer tells you more than the price tag.
1.“Is the RAM soldered, or is there a free memory slot?”
A good answer: “Soldered 8 GB” on a machine you want for five years is a no. If they can't answer, don't buy.
2.“What is the full CPU model number, and is the storage NVMe or eMMC?”
A good answer: A full model string (e.g. Core 5 210H, Ryzen 5 7530U) and NVMe SSD. “i5 hai sir” is not an answer.
3.“What is the screen brightness in nits and the panel type?”
A good answer: 300+ nits, IPS. TN panels and 250-nit screens are why you can't see anything near a window.

What it costs to run
The sticker price is one part of owning a laptop. Adjust the numbers to your own usage and tariff to see the electricity cost a star rating actually translates to.
Units per year
156 kWh
Cost per year
₹1,248 (≈$15)
Cost over 5 years
₹6,240 (≈$75)
Often more than the price difference between two models.
Charger wattage is the ceiling, not the average draw. Estimates only — actual consumption varies with ambient temperature, settings and unit condition. USD values are approximate.
Does it fit your budget?
Most laptop purchases are financed. Check the monthly outgo and the interest you actually pay before you decide which spec level you can afford.
Monthly EMI
₹6,285 (≈$75)
Total interest
₹5,421 (≈$65)
Total paid
₹75,421 (≈$910)
A no-cost EMI offer should make this equal the price.
Reducing-balance calculation. Processing fees, GST on interest and insurance are not included, so confirm the final schedule with your lender. USD values are approximate.
Carry and cool
A laptop bag, cooling pad and mouse protect your purchase and make daily use more comfortable.
Laptop bag / sleeve
Padding and a separate laptop compartment prevent screen pressure and corner dents.
These are common add-ons for this category, not recommendations. Prices and availability vary; confirm fit and compatibility on the product page before buying.
Extended warranty & AMC — what to check before you say yes
For electronics the expensive failures are the display, the board and the battery. Extended cover is worth it only when it names those parts and offers a repair path in your city.
Ask these five questions
✓Is the motherboard and display panel covered, and up to what value?
✓Is accidental and liquid damage a separate add-on?
✓Is repair at an authorised centre with genuine parts?
✓Is the battery covered, and below what health percentage?
✓Is pick-up and drop included, or do you carry it in?
Usually not covered
×Theft and loss (that's a separate insurance product)
×Software issues, data loss and unauthorised repairs
×Batteries and chargers on most plans
×Cracked screens unless accidental damage is bought explicitly
Rule of thumb: worth considering on a high-value device you carry around, rarely worth it on a low-cost one where a plan costs more than ~15% of the price.

The spec sheet, decoded
CPU tier & generation
The chip family (i5/i7, Ryzen 5/7, M-series) plus how new it is.
Why it matters
A current-gen mid chip beats a two-generation-old high-end chip on battery and heat.
What to check
U/低-power suffixes are efficient, H/HX are fast and hot. Match the suffix to your use, not the number.
RAM (and whether it's soldered)
Working memory for open apps and browser tabs.
Why it matters
16 GB is the current comfortable floor; 8 GB starts swapping with a browser and one heavy app.
What to check
Soldered cannot be upgraded later — check for a free SO-DIMM slot if you buy 8 GB.
Storage: NVMe SSD vs SATA vs eMMC
How fast files and the OS load.
Why it matters
boots and opens projects several times faster than ; is painfully slow.
What to check
512 GB is the sane baseline; check whether a second M.2 slot exists.
Display: nits, panel, colour
Brightness, vs vs , and sRGB coverage.
Why it matters
300 is unusable outdoors; 100% sRGB matters for any photo or design work.
What to check
'FHD display' with no or panel type listed usually means a dim 250-nit panel.
Battery Wh vs claimed hours
Watt-hours is real capacity; 'up to 12 hours' is a lab loop.
Why it matters
divided by realistic 8–15 W draw gives you a truer estimate.
What to check
Under 50 in a 15-inch laptop means you carry the charger everywhere.
Thermals & sustained performance
Whether the cooling keeps the chip fast after 10 minutes.
Why it matters
Thin machines often drop to half speed under continuous load — the spec sheet never says this.
What to check
Look for a sustained-load review of that exact model, not just the chip.
Ports & charging
USB-C with Power Delivery, , card reader, Thunderbolt.
Why it matters
USB-C PD charging means one charger for laptop and phone; missing means dongles forever.
What to check
Confirm the USB-C port supports both display output and charging — many only do data.
Before you pay
✓Write down the three heaviest things you'll run, then spec for those, not for 'future-proofing'.
✓Confirm upgradability and free M.2 slot on the exact model number.
✓Check display brightness in and sRGB percentage.
✓Search '<model> throttling review' before buying any thin-and-light for heavy work.
✓Check keyboard/trackpad in person if you type all day.
Common traps
!Same model name, different configs — the review you read may be a different panel and chip.
!Discounted last-gen units with soldered 8 GB .
!Gaming laptops bought for portability: 2.4 kg plus a 240 W brick.
