Washing Machine

The choice is mostly about water, fabric care and your back. Capacity is the one spec people get wrong most often — usually by buying too small.

Quick answer

7–8 kg capacity suits most 3–4 person families.

Front load saves water and power; top load is easier to load.

1000–1200 spin speed is the sweet spot.

An inverter motor runs quieter and lasts longer.

In the shop

Ask the salesperson this exact question

Read these off your phone at the counter. The answer tells you more than the price tag.

  1. 1.“What is the maximum spin speed in RPM?”

A good answer: 1000–1200 RPM for most homes, 1400 if clothes must dry indoors. Under 800 means damp clothes.

  2. 2.“Is the drum rated for hard water, and what does a service visit cost after warranty?”

A good answer: A rupee figure and a service centre address, not a vague “the company will handle it”.

Find your fit

What it costs to run

The sticker price is one part of owning a washing machine. Adjust the numbers to your own usage and tariff to see the electricity cost a star rating actually translates to.

Units per year

100 kWh

Cost per year

₹800 (≈$9.60)

Cost over 5 years

₹4,000 (≈$48)

Often more than the price difference between two models.

Heated wash cycles can triple this; cold wash is the cheapest setting. Estimates only — actual consumption varies with ambient temperature, settings and unit condition. USD values are approximate.

Does it fit your budget?

Most washing machine purchases are financed. Check the monthly outgo and the interest you actually pay before you decide which spec level you can afford.

Monthly EMI

₹2,694 (≈$32)

Total interest

₹2,323 (≈$28)

Total paid

₹32,323 (≈$390)

A no-cost EMI offer should make this equal the price.

Reducing-balance calculation. Processing fees, GST on interest and insurance are not included, so confirm the final schedule with your lender. USD values are approximate.

Protect and maintain

A stand and regular descaler reduce vibration damage and drum scale in hard-water cities.

Stand / trolley

Raises the drum off a wet floor and makes moving it easier during service.

Descaler

Hard water leaves limescale on the heater and drum; descale every few months.

Machine cover

Protects the panel and paint from bathroom humidity and direct sun.

These are common add-ons for this category, not recommendations. Prices and availability vary; confirm fit and compatibility on the product page before buying.

Extended warranty & AMC — what to check before you say yes

Every new appliance already carries a brand warranty. An extended plan or AMC only adds value where it covers the parts that actually fail, with on-site service in your city — so read the cover, not the discount.

Ask these five questions

  • ✓Is the motor and drum covered in full, and how does that overlap with the brand's motor warranty?
  • ✓Is the control board / PCB covered?
  • ✓Is on-site labour and transport included?
  • ✓Are inlet pipes, filters and belts excluded as consumables?
  • ✓Is damage from hard-water scaling excluded?

Usually not covered

  • ×Hard-water scaling and descaling work
  • ×Inlet/outlet pipes, filters, belts
  • ×Physical damage and pest damage
  • ×Damage from overloading beyond rated capacity

Rule of thumb: a plan is rarely worth it if it costs more than ~15% of the product price, if the item is cheap to repair locally, or if the brand's own service network in your city is already strong.

Buy it locally

Shops near you that stock washing machine

Sometimes the local dealer beats online on price, installation or the exchange offer — and service visits are faster. Tell us where you are and we'll list nearby stores. We don't rank or take money from any shop; results come from Google Maps.

The area you enter, or coordinates rounded to about 1 km if you use your location, are sent to Google Maps through Lovable to find places. Lookups are temporarily cached for up to 30 minutes.

The spec sheet, decoded

Capacity (kg)

Dry weight of clothes per full load.

Why it matters

Too small means two cycles per wash day, which costs more water and time than the bigger machine ever would.

What to check

Roughly 6 kg for 2 people, 7–8 kg for 4, 9 kg+ if you wash bedding or curtains at home.

Front load vs top load

Drum on its side versus a vertical tub.

Why it matters

Front load uses far less water, cleans better and is gentler; top load is cheaper, faster and easier to load.

What to check

Front load needs a level floor, a drain, and you cannot add a stray sock mid-cycle on most models.

Spin speed (RPM)

How hard it wrings clothes at the end.

Why it matters

Higher means drier clothes out of the drum, crucial if you have no sunlight or a dryer.

What to check

1000–1200 is the sweet spot; above 1400 creases delicate fabrics.

Inverter motor

Variable-speed, usually direct-drive without a belt.

Why it matters

Quieter, more durable, less electricity — and usually a 10-year motor warranty.

What to check

The 10-year warranty is on the motor only; the electronics carry 1–2 years.

Wash programmes that matter

Quick wash, heavy soil, delicate, and a tub-clean cycle.

Why it matters

Three or four programmes cover 95% of laundry; the other fifteen are shelf appeal.

What to check

Front loads must run a hot tub-clean monthly or they smell.

Water and energy rating

Litres per cycle and units per year.

Why it matters

A front load can use less than half the water of a top load per kilo of laundry.

What to check

Ratings assume a full load — half loads wreck the economics on any machine.

Before you pay

  • ✓Measure the alcove width, depth with door open, and check inlet/drain position.
  • ✓Count people and whether you wash bedding at home, then size capacity up one step.
  • ✓Check water pressure requirement — some front loads need a minimum inlet pressure.
  • ✓Confirm free installation and whether a stand or trolley is extra.
  • ✓Ask about spares and service in your area for that brand.

Common traps

  • !Buying 6 kg for a family of four because it fits the budget — you'll run twice as many cycles.
  • !'Fully automatic' does not mean front load; semi-automatic twin tubs are still sold alongside.
  • !Ignoring drum-clean maintenance and then blaming the machine for the smell.

Front load costs more upfront and less to run; top load is the reverse.
