Smartphone

Phone marketing is a megapixel race, but the things that make a phone feel old are the chip, the software support window and the battery. Camera sensor size beats megapixel count every time.

Quick answer

Latest-gen chip + 6+ GB for a smooth 3–4 year life.

storage, not ; 128 GB minimum.

AMOLED with 90+ and 1000+ outdoors.

Check software update promise and battery size.

In the shop

Ask the salesperson this exact question

Read these off your phone at the counter. The answer tells you more than the price tag.

  1. 1.“Which exact chipset is inside, and what is the sensor behind the 108 MP number?”

A good answer: A chipset name you can look up. Megapixels without a good sensor and processor means slow, mushy photos.

  2. 2.“How many years of Android/OS and security updates are promised?”

A good answer: A stated number of years in writing. “Lifetime updates” is not a thing.

  3. 3.“Is the display brightness enough for outdoor use — what is the peak nits figure?”

A good answer: 800+ nits peak. Below 500 and you'll be shading the screen with your hand every afternoon.

Answer all 3 questions to see the spec sheet to shop with.

Does it fit your budget?

Most smartphone purchases are financed. Check the monthly outgo and the interest you actually pay before you decide which spec level you can afford.

Monthly EMI

₹4,119 (≈$49)

Total interest

₹2,073 (≈$25)

Total paid

₹37,073 (≈$440)

A no-cost EMI offer should make this equal the price.

Reducing-balance calculation. Processing fees, GST on interest and insurance are not included, so confirm the final schedule with your lender. USD values are approximate.

Everyday protection

A case and screen protector are cheap insurance against the most common repairs.

Screen protector

Tempered glass absorbs impact that would otherwise crack the display.

Protective case

Corner reinforcement matters more than looks for drop protection.

Fast charger

Use the wattage the phone supports; a slower charger wastes time and battery cycles.

These are common add-ons for this category, not recommendations. Prices and availability vary; confirm fit and compatibility on the product page before buying.

Extended warranty & AMC — what to check before you say yes

For electronics the expensive failures are the display, the board and the battery. Extended cover is worth it only when it names those parts and offers a repair path in your city.

Ask these five questions

  • ✓Is screen damage covered, and how many claims per year?
  • ✓Is liquid damage included or a separate add-on?
  • ✓Is repair at an authorised centre with genuine parts?
  • ✓Is the battery covered, and below what health percentage?
  • ✓Is there a deductible you pay per claim?

Usually not covered

  • ×Theft and loss (that's a separate insurance product)
  • ×Software issues, data loss and unauthorised repairs
  • ×Batteries and chargers on most plans
  • ×Cracked screens unless accidental damage is bought explicitly

Rule of thumb: worth considering on a high-value device you carry around, rarely worth it on a low-cost one where a plan costs more than ~15% of the price.

Shops near you that stock smartphone

Sometimes the local dealer beats online on price, installation or the exchange offer. Tell us where you are and we'll list nearby stores. We don't rank or take money from any shop; results come from Google Maps.

The area you enter, or coordinates rounded to about 1 km if you use your location, are sent to Google Maps through Lovable to find places. Lookups are temporarily cached for up to 30 minutes.

The spec sheet, decoded

Processor (SoC) and fabrication node

The main chip; smaller nm numbers usually mean cooler and more efficient.

Why it matters

It decides smoothness three years from now, not on day one — every phone feels fast in the shop.

What to check

Renamed last-gen chips in 'new' phones. Search the exact chip name, not the phone name.

RAM and storage type (UFS vs eMMC)

Working memory, and how fast the built-in storage reads.

Why it matters

2.2/3.1/4.0 storage affects app launch and camera burst speed far more than extra 'virtual '.

What to check

'8+8 GB ' is 8 GB plus swap on storage. Ignore the second number.

Display: panel, refresh rate, brightness

AMOLED vs LCD, 60/90/120 , and peak outdoors.

Why it matters

High refresh makes cheap phones feel expensive; 800+ peak decides whether you can read it in sunlight.

What to check

PWM dimming on cheap AMOLEDs gives some people eye strain at night.

Camera: sensor size and OIS

How much light the sensor collects, and whether it is stabilised.

Why it matters

A 50 MP sensor with beats a 108 MP one without it, especially indoors and at night.

What to check

2 MP 'macro' and 'depth' cameras exist to pad the spec sheet. They add nothing.

Battery capacity and charging

mAh capacity plus charging wattage.

Why it matters

5000 mAh with an efficient chip is a genuine two-day phone; fast charging matters more than capacity if you top up daily.

What to check

Fast charging shortens battery lifespan; check whether the charger is even in the box.

Software update policy

How many years of OS and security updates are promised.

Why it matters

This is the real expiry date of the phone — banking apps eventually refuse old versions.

What to check

'2 years of updates' on a phone launched 8 months ago means roughly 16 months left.

Build details: IP rating, glass, bands

Water resistance, screen protection, and supported network bands.

Why it matters

IP68 survives accidents; missing 5G bands make an imported phone slower on your network.

What to check

IP54 means splash resistant only. Grey-market imports often lack local bands and warranty.

Before you pay

  • ✓Look up the exact chipset name and its release year before buying.
  • ✓Confirm the promised number of OS and security update years in writing.
  • ✓Check storage type ( 3.1 or better) and whether is expandable — it never is.
  • ✓Test the display brightness outdoors if you can, not under shop lighting.
  • ✓Confirm the charger and cable are included, and the local service centre exists.

Common traps

  • !Megapixel counts used to hide a tiny sensor and no stabilisation.
  • !'Virtual ' numbers added to the real RAM in advertising.
  • !Last-gen chips relaunched in a new body at a new-phone price.

Typical range: budget workhorse to flagship; the biggest jump in feel happens in the mid tier.
