Home Inverter & Battery

People buy an inverter by price and then wonder why the fan stops in an hour. The inverter's VA decides how much you can run; the battery's Ah decides how long.

The spec sheet, decoded

VA rating

How much load the inverter can carry at once.

Why it matters

Total watts you'll run ÷ 0.7 = VA needed. Overloading trips or damages the unit.

What to check

Add up actual wattages: fan 75W, tube 20W, TV 100W, fridge 200W (surge much higher).

Battery capacity (Ah)

How long it can supply that load.

Why it matters

Backup hours ≈ (Ah x 12 x 0.7) ÷ load in watts.

What to check

150 Ah tubular is the common sweet spot for 3–4 hours of fans and lights.

Sine wave vs square wave

Shape of the output current.

Why it matters

Pure sine wave is required for fridges, computers and modern TVs; square wave hums and heats motors.

What to check

'Modified sine' is a compromise — avoid it if you'll run a fridge or PC.

Battery type: flat plate vs tubular vs lithium

Construction of the battery.

Why it matters

Tubular lasts 4–5 years with deep cycles; flat plate is cheaper but dies faster; lithium is maintenance-free and compact but costly.

What to check

Tubular needs distilled water topping every 3–4 months.

Charging current & warranty

How fast it recharges and how the warranty is split.

Why it matters

In areas with long cuts, higher charging current matters. Battery warranty is often part full, part pro-rata.

What to check

Ask exactly how many months are full replacement vs pro-rata.

Before you pay

  • List every appliance you want on backup and add up the watts.
  • Pick VA = total watts ÷ 0.7, then Ah for the hours you need.
  • Insist on pure sine wave if a fridge, PC or modern TV is on backup.
  • Confirm full-replacement warranty months vs pro-rata on the battery.

Common traps

  • !Combo offers where a big inverter is paired with an undersized battery.
  • !Square-wave inverters sold for homes with computers.
  • !Ignoring fridge surge current — it can be 3x the running watts.

700 VA basic setups to 1500 VA sine-wave with tubular batteries.
