Electronics

Headphones & Earbuds

Most headphone disappointment is a fit problem, not a sound problem. After that, it's codec support and how honestly the noise cancellation is described.

Quick answer

Comfortable fit matters more than driver size.

/aptX only help if your phone supports them.

is for steady noise (flights, AC), not voices.

Battery life with on is the real number.

In the shop

Ask the salesperson this exact question

Read these off your phone at the counter. The answer tells you more than the price tag.

  1. 1.“What is the battery life with ANC switched on?”

A good answer: The ANC-on figure. The number on the box is almost always ANC-off.

  2. 2.“What is the IP rating, and are replacement ear tips or pads available?”

A good answer: IPX4 minimum for gym use, and a yes on spare parts.

Extend life

Ear tips and a case are the small items that keep headphones working for years.

Carry case

Prevents cable kinks and driver damage in a bag.

Replacement ear tips

Silicone tips degrade and lose seal; foam tips improve isolation.

These are common add-ons for this category, not recommendations. Prices and availability vary; confirm fit and compatibility on the product page before buying.

Extended warranty & AMC — what to check before you say yes

For electronics the expensive failures are the display, the board and the battery. Extended cover is worth it only when it names those parts and offers a repair path in your city.

Ask these five questions

  • ✓Is the display / motherboard covered, and up to what value?
  • ✓Is accidental and liquid damage included, or is that a separate add-on?
  • ✓Is repair done at an authorised service centre with genuine parts?
  • ✓Is battery degradation covered, and below what health threshold?
  • ✓What's the turnaround promise, and is a standby device provided?

Usually not covered

  • ×Theft and loss (that's a separate insurance product)
  • ×Software issues, data loss and unauthorised repairs
  • ×Batteries and chargers on most plans
  • ×Cracked screens unless accidental damage is bought explicitly

Rule of thumb: worth considering on a high-value device you carry around, rarely worth it on a low-cost one where a plan costs more than ~15% of the price.

Shops near you that stock headphones & earbuds

Sometimes the local dealer beats online on price, installation or the exchange offer. Tell us where you are and we'll list nearby stores. We don't rank or take money from any shop; results come from Google Maps.

The area you enter, or coordinates rounded to about 1 km if you use your location, are sent to Google Maps through Lovable to find places. Lookups are temporarily cached for up to 30 minutes.

The spec sheet, decoded

Driver size and type

The speaker inside: dynamic, balanced armature, or planar.

Why it matters

Dynamic drivers give bass weight; larger isn't automatically better, tuning matters more.

What to check

Huge driver numbers on cheap earbuds usually mean boomy, muddy bass.

Bluetooth codec (SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC)

How audio is compressed before it flies to your ears.

Why it matters

Your phone and headphones must both support a codec for it to be used at all.

What to check

on the box is useless if your phone only sends .

Active noise cancellation (ANC)

Microphones cancel steady low-frequency noise like engines and fans.

Why it matters

It transforms flights and commutes; it does very little against speech.

What to check

'ENC' is microphone noise reduction for calls — it does nothing for what you hear.

Impedance and sensitivity

How hard the headphone is to drive.

Why it matters

High- wired headphones sound thin from a phone and need an amp.

What to check

Anything over ~80 ohms should be paired with a DAC/amp, budget for it.

Battery life and charging

Hours per charge, with and without , plus the case's extra charges.

Why it matters

Advertised figures are almost always off at 50% volume.

What to check

Earbud batteries degrade in 2–3 years and are not replaceable.

Fit, seal and IP rating

Ear tips, clamping force, and sweat/water resistance.

Why it matters

A bad seal loses all the bass and most of the . Fit is the single biggest variable.

What to check

For gym use, IPX4 minimum; for over-ears, check clamp pressure with glasses on.

Latency and multipoint

Audio delay for video/gaming, and connecting to two devices at once.

Why it matters

Above ~150 ms lip sync is visibly off; multipoint saves constant re-pairing.

What to check

'Game mode' cuts latency but usually shortens battery and range.

Before you pay

  • ✓Check which codec your phone actually supports before paying for or aptX.
  • ✓Try the fit for at least ten minutes; swap ear tips until the bass appears.
  • ✓Ask for -on battery figures, not the headline number.
  • ✓For calls, look for reviews with real recordings, not spec claims.
  • ✓For wired use, check against whatever you'll plug into.

Common traps

  • !ENC marketed as if it were .
  • !Frequency response ranges like 20 –40 kHz — meaningless without a response curve.
  • !Sealed earbuds bought for outdoor running where you need to hear traffic.

Typical range: honest budget wired pairs to premium over-ears.
