Electric Kettle

Kettles are cheap enough that people buy blind, then live with plastic-tasting water or a burnt-out element within a year.

The spec sheet, decoded

Inner body material

Stainless steel vs plastic interior.

Why it matters

Plastic interiors leach taste and degrade with boiling water daily.

What to check

Some 'steel' kettles are steel outside, plastic inside — check the inner surface.

Concealed vs exposed element

Whether the heating coil is under the base plate or sitting in the water.

Why it matters

Concealed elements are easier to clean and don't scale as badly in hard water.

What to check

Exposed coils are cheaper but collect white scale fast.

Wattage & boil time

1,200–2,000W decides how fast a litre boils.

Why it matters

1,500W boils a litre in about 4 minutes; lower wattage doubles that.

What to check

Check your socket rating if the kettle is above 1,500W.

Auto cut-off & boil-dry protection

Switches off when boiling or when empty.

Why it matters

This is the main safety feature; boil-dry protection saves the element.

What to check

Insist on both, plus ISI mark.

Temperature control

Presets for green tea (80°C), coffee (92°C), boiling.

Why it matters

Only matters if you brew tea or coffee seriously; otherwise skip.

What to check

Costs 2–3x more than a plain kettle.

Before you pay

  • Confirm the inner body is 304 stainless steel.
  • Prefer concealed element, especially in hard-water areas.
  • Check auto cut-off, boil-dry protection and ISI mark.
  • Pick 1.2–1.5 L for a family, 0.8–1 L for single use.

Common traps

  • !Plastic-interior kettles marketed as 'stainless steel body'.
  • !Very cheap kettles with no boil-dry protection.
  • !Paying for temperature presets you'll never use.
