Dehumidifier

If walls sweat, clothes take two days to dry, or a cupboard smells musty, a dehumidifier often solves it faster than any paint or spray. But capacity numbers are quoted under lab conditions that overstate real-world performance, and compressor vs desiccant models behave very differently in cool rooms. This guide keeps the numbers honest.

Quick answer

For most homes, a compressor dehumidifier rated 10–20 litres a day.

Look for a humidistat, a continuous-drain option and a 2L or bigger tank.

Choose desiccant only if the room regularly drops below about 15°C.

Ignore lab-condition capacity claims; real output is lower.

What it costs to run

The sticker price is one part of owning a dehumidifier. Adjust the numbers to your own usage and tariff to see the electricity cost a star rating actually translates to.

Units per year

360 kWh

Cost per year

₹2,880 (≈$35)

Cost over 5 years

₹14,400 (≈$170)

Often more than the price difference between two models.

A humidistat cuts this sharply by cycling off once the room hits target humidity. Estimates only — actual consumption varies with ambient temperature, settings and unit condition. USD values are approximate.

Extended warranty & AMC — what to check before you say yes

Every new appliance already carries a brand warranty. An extended plan or AMC only adds value where it covers the parts that actually fail, with on-site service in your city — so read the cover, not the discount.

Ask these five questions

  • ✓Which parts are covered, and is the most expensive part (motor, compressor, panel) covered in full?
  • ✓Is service on-site at home, or carry-in to a centre?
  • ✓Are periodic services and consumables included, or billed separately?
  • ✓How many claims are allowed, and is there a per-claim or total payout cap?
  • ✓What does a claim need — original invoice, serial number, purchase within X days?

Usually not covered

  • ×Physical damage, liquid ingress and pest/rodent damage
  • ×Voltage surge damage where no stabiliser was used
  • ×Consumables: filters, gaskets, belts, batteries
  • ×Cosmetic parts and accessories

Rule of thumb: a plan is rarely worth it if it costs more than ~15% of the product price, if the item is cheap to repair locally, or if the brand's own service network in your city is already strong.

The spec sheet, decoded

Extraction rate (litres/day)

Water removed per day, measured at 30°C / 80% humidity in a lab.

Why it matters

Real homes are cooler and drier than the lab — expect 50–70% of the rated figure.

What to check

A 10L/day unit suits one damp room; whole-floor damp needs 20L/day or more.

Compressor vs desiccant

Compressor units condense moisture like an AC; desiccant units absorb it into a rotor.

Why it matters

Compressors are efficient in warm rooms but stall below ~15°C; desiccants work in the cold but use more power.

What to check

Cold, unheated room in winter? Compressor models barely extract anything there.

Humidistat

Sets a target humidity, usually 40–60%.

Why it matters

Stops the unit running all day; 50–55% is the comfort sweet spot.

What to check

Models without one run constantly and over-dry the air.

Tank size and continuous drain

Collection tank capacity, and a hose outlet for non-stop draining.

Why it matters

A 2L tank on a 12L/day unit means emptying it six times a day — the hose matters more than the tank.

What to check

Check the drain outlet height; it drains by gravity, not a pump.

Noise

Typically 35–48 — like a quiet fan to a loud conversation.

Why it matters

Bedrooms and living rooms need the quieter end; check the lowest fan speed rating.

What to check

Compressor hum carries through floors at night; desiccants are often quieter.

Air filter / laundry mode

A basic dust filter and a high-fan mode aimed at drying clothes indoors.

Why it matters

Laundry mode genuinely cuts indoor drying time in half in humid weather.

What to check

Filters need monthly washing — check it's easy to remove.

Before you pay

  • ✓Size by the dampest room, not the whole home — you can move the unit.
  • ✓Humidistat plus continuous-drain outlet.
  • ✓Compressor for warm rooms, desiccant for cold ones.
  • ✓Check the noise rating at low fan speed for bedroom use.

Common traps

  • !Mini 'Peltier' dehumidifiers sold for whole rooms — they extract a cup a day at best.
  • !Lab extraction figures quoted without test conditions — always check the °C and % RH.
  • !Ignoring running cost: a 250W unit 8 hours a day is a real line on the electricity bill.

₹12,000–₹25,000 (≈$140–$300) for a dependable compressor unit. Mini Peltier units under ₹6,000 (≈$72) are wardrobe gadgets, not room solutions.
