Blanket & Comforter

Blankets and comforters are sold by thickness and print. Warmth is actually a number: of fill for a comforter, rating for a duvet, and fill type — down, or cotton — which decides how it behaves in Delhi winter versus Chennai monsoon.

Quick answer

150–250 fill for most Indian cities.

Microfibre is practical; down needs fill power.

Cotton shells breathe better in humid climates.

Buy a size larger than the bed to avoid tug-of-war.

Ask the salesperson this exact question

Read these off your phone at the counter. The answer tells you more than the price tag.

  1. 1.“What is the fill weight (GSM) and the fill material?”

A good answer: Fill GSM, not total product weight — that's the standard trick here.

  2. 2.“Is the shell breathable enough for our winters, and is it washable?”

A good answer: Cotton or microfibre shell, machine washable. Heavy polyester traps sweat.

The spec sheet, decoded

Fill GSM

Weight of the filling per square metre, typically 120–500 .

Why it matters

This is the honest warmth number: 120–200 for AC rooms, 200–300 for mild winter, 300–500 for north Indian cold.

What to check

Total product weight quoted instead of fill — ask for the filling weight specifically.

TOG rating

Thermal resistance of a duvet — 4.5 summer, 9–10.5 spring/autumn, 13.5 winter.

Why it matters

Lets you compare two duvets fairly, regardless of loft and marketing words.

What to check

Most Indian homes never need 13.5 except in the far north or hills.

Fill type

Down/feather, (polyfill), cotton, wool, or a shell-only quilt.

Why it matters

Down is warmest per gram and breathes; is cheap, washable and allergy-safe; cotton dohars suit humid nights.

What to check

'Down-alternative' is polyester. Real down needs fill power, not just weight.

Fill power (for down)

Loft of the down — 550, 650, 800.

Why it matters

Higher fill power gives the same warmth with less weight, so the quilt drapes instead of pressing down.

What to check

Below 550 fill power, down loses its advantage over a good .

Shell fabric and thread count

The outer cover — cotton, poly-cotton, or downproof cambric.

Why it matters

Breathable cotton shells prevent night sweats; downproof weave stops feathers poking out.

What to check

Polyester shells trap moisture and feel clammy in humid weather.

Baffle box vs stitch-through

How the filling is held in place.

Why it matters

Baffle boxes keep loft even; stitch-through creates cold seams where fill is squeezed out.

What to check

Large unstitched channels let the filling migrate into one corner after two washes.

Washability

Machine-washable at home vs dry clean only.

Why it matters

A quilt you cannot wash becomes a dust-mite reservoir in a year.

What to check

Check whether it fits in your machine drum — most 6–7 kg washers cannot take a double comforter.

Before you pay

  • ✓Decide by climate: 120–200 for AC rooms, 200–300 GSM for coastal winter, 300–500 GSM for north Indian cold.
  • ✓Ask for fill in writing, not just 'thick' or 'heavy'.
  • ✓Prefer a cotton or downproof cambric shell over pure polyester.
  • ✓Check baffle-box construction if you want even warmth after washes.
  • ✓Confirm it is machine washable and actually fits your washing machine.

Common traps

  • !'Winter special' quilts with 150 fill in a bulky-looking shell.
  • !Down-alternative sold at down prices.
  • !Velvet-finish comforters that look plush but sleep sweaty.

Two mid-warmth layers beat one thick quilt — India's winter is short and uneven.
