Bed Sheet

Bed sheets are sold on one number — thread count — which brands inflate by counting plies. What actually decides how a sheet feels on an Indian summer night is the cotton staple length, the weave ( vs ), and whether the pocket depth actually fits your mattress.

Quick answer

200–300 thread count, single-ply, 100% cotton.

Long-staple cotton (Pima/Egyptian) for softness.

Percale for crisp and cool; for silky.

Check pocket depth fits your mattress height.

In the shop

Ask the salesperson this exact question

Read these off your phone at the counter. The answer tells you more than the price tag.

  1. 1.“What is the actual thread count and the cotton type?”

A good answer: 200–400 count in real cotton. “1000 thread count” at ₹700 (≈$8.40) is counted differently.

  2. 2.“What are the exact sheet dimensions, and will they fit a mattress this thick?”

A good answer: Numbers in inches including pocket depth.

Shops near you that stock bed sheet

Sometimes the local dealer beats online on price, installation or the exchange offer. Tell us where you are and we'll list nearby stores. We don't rank or take money from any shop; results come from Google Maps.

The spec sheet, decoded

Thread count (TC)

Threads per square inch of fabric.

Why it matters

Useful only up to a point — 200–400 in genuine single-ply cotton is the sweet spot.

What to check

1000TC+ at a low price is multi-ply counting or polyester. Real high- cotton is expensive and heavy.

Fibre and staple length

Regular cotton, long-staple (Pima/Egyptian/Supima), cotton-poly blend, , linen.

Why it matters

Long-staple cotton is cooler, softer with washing and pills less. Polyester traps heat.

What to check

'Cotton-rich' or 'cotton feel' means blended. Microfibre is polyester — cheap, hot, and static in dry weather.

Weave: percale vs sateen

Percale is a crisp one-over-one weave; floats more threads on the surface for shine.

Why it matters

Percale breathes better and suits Indian summers; feels silky and warmer, better for AC rooms and winter.

What to check

Sateen snags easily and shows wear on the shiny face after a year of hot washes.

GSM

Fabric weight per square metre — roughly 110–140 for sheets.

Why it matters

Too light and the sheet is see-through and tears; too heavy and it sleeps hot.

What to check

Under 100 sheets go thin at the hip line within months.

Fitted pocket depth

How deep the elastic corner stretches, in inches or cm.

Why it matters

Indian mattresses with a topper often run 8–12 inches; a 7-inch pocket keeps popping off.

What to check

Measure your mattress thickness before buying. All-round elastic beats corner-only elastic.

Size standards

Single, double, queen, king — sizes differ between Indian and US labelling.

Why it matters

A US queen is not an Indian queen; buying by name alone gets you a short sheet.

What to check

Always buy by cm/inches printed on the pack, not by the word 'king'.

Dyeing and finish

Reactive dyes, OEKO-TEX certification, wrinkle-free resin finishes.

Why it matters

Reactive dyes hold colour through hot washes; OEKO-TEX means tested for harmful chemicals.

What to check

'Wrinkle-free' usually means a resin finish that reduces breathability and can irritate sensitive skin.

Before you pay

  • ✓Match weave to climate: for hot, humid months; for AC bedrooms and winter.
  • ✓Look for '100% long-staple cotton, single ply' — not just a thread-count number.
  • ✓Measure mattress thickness and buy a fitted pocket 2 inches deeper.
  • ✓Check the size in cm on the pack against your bed.
  • ✓Prefer OEKO-TEX certified dyes if anyone in the house has sensitive skin.

Common traps

  • !1500TC sheets at low prices — impossible in genuine single-ply cotton.
  • !Glossy 'silk touch' sets that are polyester satin and sleep hot.
  • !Sets priced by piece count; two pillow covers do not make up for a thin sheet.

One 300TC long-staple sheet outlasts three 1500TC '' sets.
