Mixer Grinder

Every mixer claims 750W. What decides whether it survives daily idli batter is the motor's copper winding, overload protection and jar coupler quality — none of which are on the front of the box.

Find your fit

The spec sheet, decoded

Wattage vs torque

Watts is power drawn; torque is turning force at low speed.

Why it matters

Grinding wet batter and chutney needs torque, not peak watts. A well-built 550W beats a cheap 750W.

What to check

Ask if the winding is copper. Aluminium windings overheat and die in 2 years.

Jar material & capacity

Stainless steel jars for wet/dry, polycarbonate for juicing.

Why it matters

Steel jars last; the blade-to-jar seal decides leaks. Sizes should match your family's batch size.

What to check

Check the jar coupler (the plastic dog) — it's the first part to strip and must be replaceable.

RPM & speed control

How fast the blade spins and how finely you can control it.

Why it matters

A pulse/whip setting prevents overheating masala and lets you control chutney texture.

What to check

Three speeds plus pulse is enough; more dials rarely change results.

Overload protector

A cut-out that trips before the motor burns.

Why it matters

Indian kitchens run mixers hard in monsoon humidity and low voltage — this switch saves the machine.

What to check

Confirm it's a resettable button, not a fuse you must get replaced.

Noise & vibration

Sound level and how much the body walks on the counter.

Why it matters

Heavier bases and rubber feet mean quieter, safer operation in small kitchens.

What to check

Run it empty in the shop; a rattling body means poor mounting.

Before you pay

  • Ask for copper winding confirmation in writing on the bill.
  • Check jar coupler availability as a spare part and its price.
  • Match jar sizes to your usual batch: 1.5 L wet, 1 L dry, 0.4 L chutney.
  • Confirm motor warranty separately from product warranty (5 years is good).

Common traps

  • !'750W' printed on a body with aluminium winding — high draw, low real grinding power.
  • !Free juicer jar you'll never use, priced into the bundle.
  • !Wet grinding done in a mixer daily; if you make batter often, buy a wet grinder instead.

Basic 500W three-jar sets to heavy-duty 750W+ with wet grinding jars.
